I’m an accredited teacher with a Bachelor of Education, teaching chess to primary school children in various locations across Melbourne for over seven years. My passion for chess began in grade 3, and since then, I have participated in chess championships, progressing from state to national levels. My teaching approach involves short lessons and practical application through chess gameplay and puzzles to enhance strategic thinking.
I believe in student-centred learning, aiming to empower students to become independent and effective learners. I prioritise building an inclusive classroom to create a safe environment for collaboration, leading to better performance on open-ended tasks. Combining my chess expertise with a degree in Primary Education, I have successfully guided students with and without prior knowledge to reach their full potential, producing formidable chess players. My ultimate pride is when students apply the lessons learned in chess to improve not only in the game but also in life.

What are some overall benefits of playing chess?
- Improves their problem solving skills: Chess kids are able to deduce and think ahead to overcome a difficult scenario.
- This prompts creativity: students will become more enthusiastic and will want to challenge themselves in finding new ways to win a game of chess (this might be through making a different opening, or finding innovative ways to end a game of chess).
- Students will become more focused on the task at hand. I have seen even seen. Talkative students become more focused playing chess.
- Which leads to the next benefit, which is discipline: I always want my students to have fun in the class but I always enforce the fact that chess is a game that was once played by ladies and gentlemen. Thus they should act like ladies and gentleman when playing a game of chess. It is common for students to become disciplined and focused in school because of this.
The Benefits for students who start young:
- It will really help students to become more focused inside and outside school.
- I have seen from past experiences that children who start off young are really motivated to learn chess thus making it easier to teach them and make them more proficient chess players.
- If they start off young when they reach older year levels they will be ahead of the other students thus becoming mentors to those students.
- I have seen exponential growth from students who started off young.
- I have been trained to teach beginners so I have been trained to teach children at a young age. So I understand what the best way is to teach chess to students who start off young.

The benefits of learning chess as a group:
- Students will be able to collaborate and discuss together
- They will be able to play chess with one another
- They will be able to create lasting friendships with each other
- It will be easier to conduct tournaments with them thus giving them an experience in playing chess in a professional manner.
The benefits of playing with the coach only.
- More one on one focus on the child.
- Child received more advise on how to improve.
- Be able to better record what areas can be improved on for next time.
