Overcoming challenges:

In chess, we face hard challenges and sometimes it doesn’t always have a sweet ending. In chess we have to face the fact that one player will win and the other will lose or we will both come out with a draw. Losing is not a great feeling and some days you come back feeling defeated and feel like chess is not meant for you because you lost today.

NEVER EVER Think Like That.

When you lose you can only get better because you can understand where you went wrong and realise a way to stop yourself from falling into the same trap.

Perseverance is one of the most important attributes of a chess player. If you lose, don’t give in and believe you are bad because you lost. Keep your head up high and push yourself to become greater. NO ONE IN CHESS, is ever unbeatable, so if you lose today, fighter harder and learn harder to get them next time.

My First Student

My passion to teach chess began when I was in high school. During that time I was one of the top chess players and was always at the library trying to hone on my chess abilities. One day, a year 8 student student walks up to me and asks if I can teach him chess. This boy had no prior knowledge of chess, however, he was enthusiastic and was willing to put in time at the library everyday to come and learn from me. So everyday for about 10 weeks, we practised at the library and we honed on his ability through advanced content as well as repetition. The results blew me away on what he achieved during his high school days. Remembering that he started learning in grade 8, he went to become a state chess player in year 9, became my high school’s number 2 chess player in their own personal tournament, and by year 10 he went on to compete in the National Chess Championships. This shows that with the right teaching and a motivated student (regardless of skill level), anything is possible.
